Penetrating and perforating eye injuries are caused by sharp and pointed instruments like needles, sticks, pencils, knives arrows, pens and glass.
In penetrating injuries, by definition, objects penetrate through the globe without an exit wound The perforating injuries have entrance and exit wounds.
These ocular traumas can cause rupture of the globe, subconjuntival hemorrhage, corneal lacerations, hyphema, iris deformities, lens disruption, or posterior segment findings such as vitreous hemorrhage, retinal tears and retinal detachment.
Complications include corneal scarring, sympathetic ophthalmia, post-traumatic glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment, endophthalmitis and enucleation.
Perforating and perforating injuries require a careful evaluation and handling of all ocular structures and adnexa and an immediate treatment.
